Global Art Issues

October 29, 2009

I decided to design an exhibition/ Project  of photos that i collected from a group of people. Originaly i wanted to try and get a photo from somebody in every country, showing again how the internet would make this so much easier. Though that ended up being a little harder then i thought so its now a group of found and given images. the first of the following images are portaits of friends and family ,who when asked sent them into me. the  images that follow that are found images of similar portaits found on others blogs or internet sites of intrest.

so this was my email….

Hi guys

im doing a project were i need to collect portrait photographs of different people. im trying to collect a variety of images so it dosen’t matter if you smile, frown, cry, look at or away from the camera, the only restrictions being that it needs to be aprox a head and shoulder image of yourself , please don’t be embarrased it would be great if you could reply to my email bbardell.munro@gmail.com pxt, tag, or i can come and photgraph you. Also if you can pass onto friends and family and if they want to participate that would be great.

thanks heaps brooke

I chose the portraits because my work at the moment is based around portraiture, and as well as putting together this exhibition im also collecting relevant imagry for my own paintings. So i was able to use these images in my works. These pictures represent how easy it is to send and display your photo, name, age, sex… to people, wether it be on the other side of the world or your next door neighbour, all just on the net, and it shows how much technology has advanced and how social networking sights like facebook, twitter and bebo are so popular because of these ability to communicate with others so easily.

I  like the contast in the relationships i have with each group of people. there is a group of people i know and have asked permission to use there portaits in this blog and the other half are complete strangers. I have never meet them before, and i doubt they will ever know that their images are being used. Yet they still have the same avaliblity to someone like me, the later group maybe even more avalible.

CONFINED and ISOLATED

September 9, 2009

My theme i’ve concluded is broken in to two parts the physical and the mental. The mental are emotions derictly linked to confinment/ isolation, these could be lonleyness, saddness, angryness etc… i looked at depression how it effects you and the people around you.  So the physical are litural representations of this theme for example i looked into cages, what cages symbolise what birds symbolise, things like child trafficking, and are humans confined to cages?  yes, some but there are more things like forcfully binding say your feet to make them smaller or having your face reconstructed to look exactly like a cat . i also have this intrest in the human form the nude and the ways human beings can minipulate their bodys.

Caged

September 9, 2009

image01[1]

Birds have been caged as pets for centurys, its said that Egyptians would keep them in vine constructed cages in there homes. The bird cage symbolises imprisonment, being trapped, it can also indicate solitude and bondage. In dreams if you saw a bird cage it could mean you were unable to fully express yourself, feelings of being locked up and a loss of freedom.

Birds by themselves symbolize different things for example the Raven can be both a symbol of distruction and despair and the bringer of bad news, it also can represent vision, power and healing. A dove symbolizes hope and peace, and the canary symbolises joy.

chinese_foot_binding[1]

This is an x-ray image of feet that have been bound, they mesaure just 3inches long. This was life for more as many as 2 billion chinese woman between the late 10th century up until 1949 when it was outlawed. The binding process started at ages 4-7 maybe later if you were poorer and needed to work, and would take 2 years until you reached your 3inch goal and the feet stopped growing.

The interesting part about foot binding is that it was seen as very erotic for men and the way woman swayed as they walked and totted on their tiny feet this was sexually exciting. their was even a book written by Qing Dynasty, which listed 48 different ways to play with bound feet. In reality uncovered bound feet were foul smelling, as fungi would grow in the unwashable folds of  skin.

if this is shocking its only because it’s on a large scale, if we think about it their are so many accounts of extream body modicication in todays society, it doesnt take much to see a heavly tatooed or pierced person on a daily bases. Woman and men go through painful operation to enlarge their breasts or re-create their faces, all the time, its almost fashionable.
